To go on
pilgrimage is not simply to journey to a holy place. There is
an inner journey as well as the outer journey. To enable the inner
journey to take place we need to practise the presence of God.
Pilgrimage is a sacramental act. The pilgrim regards and touches
the physical places in order to apprehend the spiritual realities
to which those places witness.
To sit sacramentally by that altar in the Basilica of the Nativity
is to allow its adornments to bring home to ones heart that
most important and wonderful truth that God became man for you
and for me.
